Vito Corleone is the aging don (head) of the Corleone Mafia Family. His youngest son Michael has returned from WWII just in time to see the wedding of Connie Corleone (Michael’s sister) to Carlo Rizzi. All of Michael’s family is involved with the Mafia, but Michael just wants to live a normal life. Drug dealer Virgil Sollozzo is looking for Mafia Families to offer him protection in exchange for a profit of the drug money. He approaches Don Corleone about it, but, much against the advice of the Don’s lawyer Tom Hagen, the Don is morally against the use of drugs, and turns down the offer. This does not please Sollozzo, who has the Don shot down by some of his hit men. The Don barely survives, which leads his son Michael to begin a violent mob war against Sollozzo and tears the Corleone family apart.

The lowly, blue-collar side of New York’s Italian mafia is explored in this crime biopic of wiseguy Henry Hill. As he makes his way from strapping young petty criminal, to big-time thief, to middle-aged cocaine addict and dealer, the film explores in detail the rules and traditions of organized crime. Watching the rise and fall of Hill and his two counterparts, the slick jack-of-all-trades criminal Jimmy Conway and the brutish, intimidating Tommy DeVito, this true story realistically explores the core, blue-collar part of the mob.

David Mamet wrote Brian De Palma's very slick and melodramatic telling of Eliot Ness' true-life attempts to apprehend the famous suerpcriminal Al Capone. In the late 1920s, Capone was riding high in the gangster circuit, and the local police departments were corrupted to the gills. Eliot Ness, personally selected by President Hoover, was assigned the task to taking him down. Ness proceeded to assemble a crack squad of supercops to do some fresh and insular investigation all on their own. The team was called “The Untouchables.”

 4. Scarface

Brian De Palma, 1983

Although not mafia in strict terms, this movie is rather about a Cartel, and tells the story of mobster Tony Montana and his rise in Miami in the early 1980s. Played by none else than Al Pacino, this movie is about drug distribution and the ways a man can go down in his life by joining the mob, no matter how luring and good it may seem for him at first.

5. Donnie Brasco
Mike Newell, 1997

One of the more recent representatives of mafia movies , Donnie Brasco stars none other than the famous Al Pacino and Johny Depp. The movie is about an FBI agent sent out to investigate the secret life of the mafia, which after some time finds out that he would rather live the life of a mobster than a cop. This movie is worth watching ,even though it comes from a more recent time.

6. Reservoir Dogs
Quentin Tarantino,1992

Directed by Quentin Tarantino himself, this movie was a huge success and is still pointed out as one of the classics in the genre. It tells the story of 6 people who never knew each other before they were hired to do a robbery. When the police tries to apprehend them, one of them dies in a shooting, and after the remaining people gather, they start suspecting each other of being an underground cop. It’s a very intricate movie with a detailed and convoluted plot which definitely deserves giving it a shot.
